Our Towns, Sorted by the Age of Their Homes
New floors and recoats for garages, basements and businesses in Salt Lake City and the rest of Salt Lake County, Utah. Below, the towns are grouped by when most of their homes were built (Census figures, American Community Survey 2020–2024), since a slab's age decides more of the prep than its town name. Every garage floor is diamond ground, and every slab gets a moisture check.
Salt Lake City
Salt Lake City has the oldest homes in the county: about a quarter were built before 1940, and the Avenues has been a local historic district since 1978, with houses going back to the late 1860s. Slabs that old usually take the longest to grind and repair, so a city estimate starts with a close look at the concrete.
Newest Suburbs: Mostly Built Since 2000
Herriman (median home built 2013), Bluffdale (2011), South Jordan (2007, home of Daybreak), Draper (2003) and Riverton (2001). These slabs are young and mostly sound, so the work is mainly diamond grinding and coating, often before oil stains and de-icer have had years to soak in.
1980s and ’90s Suburbs
West Jordan (median home built 1995), Midvale (1987), South Salt Lake (1986) and Magna (1985). Many of these slabs have 30 to 40 winters behind them, so they tend to be stained and tired rather than broken, a good fit for a flake or metallic resurface.
The 1970s Boom Towns
Sandy (median home built 1985, with more homes from the 1970s than any other decade), West Valley City (1985, the county's second-largest city, also busiest in the 1970s), Taylorsville (1982), Murray (1978) and Cottonwood Heights (1978). In Sandy, Taylorsville and Cottonwood Heights about a third of homes date from the 1970s. Those garage floors often need cracks filled and oil stains ground out before they're coated.
Post-War Neighborhoods: 1950s and ’60s
Millcreek (median home built 1973, with the 1950s its biggest decade), Holladay (1969, with nearly half its homes built between 1950 and 1969) and Kearns (1977, with a large share from the 1950s). Canyon Rim in Millcreek, for one, was built out after World War II. These are among the oldest slabs in the county outside Salt Lake City itself, which is why a moisture check, grinding and crack repair happen before anything else.
